Waiter Defends Special Needs Child

Back in 2013, this man, Michael Garcia, risked his job to stand up for a special needs child, Milo Castillo.

Special Needs Child and Michael Garcia

A waiter in Houston put his job on the line and received praise after he told a table he was unwilling to serve them.

Michael Garcia, the server, was waiting on some regular customers, a family with a 5-year-old son named Milo. Milo has Down syndrome. Milo was excited about some new words he had learned, and was being a little noisy saying them.

After another family of regular customers complained about the child’s sounds, Garcia moved the irritated group to a different table.

He then overheard someone from that table say “special needs children need to be special somewhere else”. Upon hearing that, Garcia informed them he would not serve them. As they got up and exited the restaurant, Garcia exclaimed “How could you say that? How could you say that about a beautiful 5-year-old angel?”

Did He Lose His Job?

Sometimes all that matters is to do the right thing…and damn the consequences. Fortunately, Mr. Garcia did not lose his job. In fact, as word got around, the restaurant experienced a surge in customers, as people came in to shake Garcia’s hand.

Many were in support of Garcia, including Milo’s mom.  She says that Milo is a very well-behaved child. About the incident, she says:

“Was he loud? Maybe a little in the moment, but honestly, the adults at our table were three times louder than he was.  If he had been obnoxious, which like any other 5-year-old he can be, I wouldn’t have thought twice about the family asking to move.”
